Sustainable Mediterranean Garden in Vilanova del Vallès | Private Residence in Vallès Oriental, Barcelona
A Mediterranean Garden Reimagined for Family Living
This landscape design project in Vilanova del Vallès, nestled in the heart of Vallès Oriental, was born from the need to transform a neglected garden left untouched for over three years. Located near a forest trail in inland Catalonia, the site offered immense potential to become a sustainable Mediterranean garden that blends naturally into the surrounding woodland.
A Private Mediterranean Retreat Designed for Wellness and Privacy
The home, situated at the edge of a Catalan forest and adjacent to a popular hiking path, required a design that would offer privacy, beauty, and functionality for a family with young children. The goal was to create a protected, harmonious outdoor space where native vegetation, organic forms, and relaxation zones would foster well-being and a deep connection with nature.
Challenge: Privacy and Family Adaptation in a Natural Setting
The main challenge was to shield the property from passersby using vegetation that adds texture, color, and visual privacy. The client also wanted a safe, versatile space for children, inspired by the Italian Mediterranean gardens they admired.
Solution: Functional, Aromatic, and Sustainable Mediterranean Design
The landscape design focused on creating a natural, relaxing, and family-friendly environment. Climbing plants were used to cover perimeter fencing, enhancing privacy and movement. The plant palette included low-water species such as citrus trees, aromatic jasmines, and drought-resistant natives, ensuring year-round fragrance, colour, and ecological resilience..

Arid Garden with an Exotic Character
At the upper part of the plot, an arid garden was designed using tropical‑looking plants capable of withstanding short periods of drought. This area creates a striking visual contrast while blending seamlessly with the surrounding Mediterranean forest. It reinforces the project’s sustainable approach and enriches the overall sensory experience.
Natural Pool and Chill‑Out Area Overlooking the Forest
The natural‑style pool merges gently with the landscape, offering freshness and beauty without disturbing the harmony of the environment. Beside it, a chill‑out area was created with sunset and forest views—an ideal space for resting, contemplating, and disconnecting. This serene corner quickly became one of the client’s favourite places.
Outdoor Dining Under a Pergola: A Bridge Between Home and Garden
At the entrance of the house, beneath a pergola, an outdoor dining area extends the home’s social life into the open air. This space connects directly with both the interior and the garden, making daily use effortless and enhancing family gatherings in a warm and functional setting.
Result: A Contemporary Mediterranean Garden for Everyday Living
This case study shows how landscape design can revive unused spaces and turn them into family-friendly sanctuaries adapted to the Mediterranean climate and natural surroundings. The Vilanova del Vallès project is a prime example of how to integrate aromatic vegetation, privacy, and aesthetic value into a sustainable outdoor living experience.
